:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Liana Schwaz -- Thriller not far from where society is headed - epic page-turner! : The Auction shocked the hell out of me. I didn’t expect how a future society, just warped a bit more than it is today, could be so disturbing. The scary part of The Auction, set 30 years in the future, is how it feels like today and then totally different at the same time. In this world, when you turn 22 you get evaluated and then bid on by corporations that control America. The winning bidder owns your future. The story has a Ray Donovan feel in that the corporations protect their assets. Sasha Cross is the main character, but for me the story hits home even more deeply with Jason Harris, who’s trying to redeem his family after an accident killed his parents. If he’s successful as an e-gamer, his family will be financially set, but there is so much anguish, pressure, and ultimately betrayal, that he keeps getting knocked down. I appreciate that I was able to read an advanced copy of The Auction and can’t wait for a sequel. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hemanshu Nigam -- Is this real life or just a book??? Must Read!!! : Often we read a book, put it down, and maybe for a day or two think about it. Tom Galvin’s The Auction, is not such a book. The weaving of the characters, the subtle but powerful statements strewn throughout, the simplest observations all stick with the reader refusing to go away, to the point where reality and fiction start to blur. From the moment I started reading this book, listening to the news or reading some headline story about Wall Street, Hollywood, or Big Tech turned into a delicate dance of trying to decipher whether Galvin was talking about life in the future, or literally today. Galvin’s interplay of people and the deep sense of knowing he brings to each character allows this book to achieve such a task using just words. One quote needs to be framed in black letters on a pure white sheet of paper. “The morning rain had cleared, but the fall breeze blew leaves across the lawn. Patches of the grass were turning yellow, a telltale sign of winter coming.” These words are so simplistic and intrinsically beautiful. And, rightfully so, they sit inside a book that collides futuristic dangers with humanitarian ideals. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jonathan V Zuck -- If you like Black Mirror, you'll LOVE The Auction! : Take a bit of capitalism, a bit of technology, a bit of corporate surveillance culture, a bit of celebrity worship and a bit of the French CPGE system and extend them out 30 years and you get a pretty dystopian future, masquerading as a perfectly logical labor market! Imagine the insane system we have for the grooming of athletes and apply it to EVERYONE and you'll begin to form a picture of the world, created by this novel. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bottito -- A great thriller that points to a very troubling future, read it! : Tom Galvin’s debut thriller, The Auction, paints a disturbing future where the major conglomerates bid on young peoples’ futures, gaining a major share of the revenue each of their purchases earn throughout their lifetimes. In a world of diminishing resources, the only way to get ahead is to be bought by one of these huge multinational companies. For the elite, it can mean tens of millions of dollars. For those struggling to get ahead, it can be a lifeline for their families. But for those young people whose actions, health, race, ethnicity, or upbringing are not what the corporate buyers want, the future can be very, very dim. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from hugh j linnehan -- Sure this novel takes place in 2050, but it really resonates today! : The Auction is so relevant in today's laissez-faire corporate climate, with behemoth, unaccountable companies worth northwards of $750 Billion swaying every aspect of our lives...and the power they wield to shape society. I was keenly interested in the writer's grasp of the contours of power in the USA and who holds the reins -- and how they are used to propel the most wealthy organizations forward. Tom Galvin's debut novel is less dystopian and more a foreshadowing of the abuse and arrogance of unchecked corporate power. It is a page-turner to the end! I normally get too distracted reading novels, but Tom Galvin has written an extremely engaging and fast-paced novel. The timeline is set in the not-too-distant future. What makes it a riveting read is that the premise of the fictitious story is frighteningly believable! The characters are well thought out and developed, and the twists and turns in their intertwined relationships and in the plot make the book hard to put down. I highly recommend The Auction.
