The Blazing World Customer Reviews
:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Lisa A. -- Not an actual book! More like a pamphlet! : This looks like someone printed it up on their home computer and stuck it together. The print is so small, no intro or author info. Very disappointed as this was a gift...not sure if I will give it, just looks so cheap! I'm an avid reader and I just couldn't get through the first page the print is so tiny! ( Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Frederick A Mitchell -- 400 year old anthropology study of another world : I enjoyed this book, but I do have to say that I was taken aback by the writing style (the book came out in the 1600's). I'm not going to sugar coat it: this book has more run on sentences than not, with many of them going on for 7-8 lines covering around 1/5 to 1/4 of a page. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Casey -- Interesting, though dated book. : I liked this book, it is true, the content is dated; however, I believe that Mr. Young did a tremendous job of editing the work. I made it much more approachable and enjoyable. I'll be keeping on eye out for more books edited by Kevin. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2018 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from elazertwist -- Utopian fiction at it's dryest : If you want to read dozens of pages of someone's guess at how the world works, all of which are totally wrong, this is the book for you. Long explanations which are just there to explain the author's physical theories, the driest possible exposition. Also maybe lesbian subtext in the latter half? The only interesting part of the story to be honest. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2021 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Suzanne -- Weird printing/publication : Needed this book for class and found this copy very strange? There was no publication information anywhere (on the cover or front pages) and there were no page numbers. There are some misspellings (this may be due to the archaic/outdated usages and spellings of words but there are no footnotes to indicate so) ( Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2019 )

- 4.0 out of 5 stars from KYLE -- The blazing world : A thrilling perception of a world that takes place seemingly in the mind of an individual who is obviously without a doubt intelligent beyond the world she lives in ( Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer. Roger Young, MD -- One of the first true science fiction novels, presents groundbreaking imagery with exploitation of allegory to address societal : One of the first science fiction novels ever written, it breaks ground using allegory to address societal ills. Considering the target audience (women) adds another layer of interest for the informed reader. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2016 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from V. G. Harwood -- Charming moments, but a bit much for me. : I didn't like this book; but I suspect that this was because it was just not for me rather than it being a comment on the quality of the writing/the book itself. Indeed, the quality of the writing is excellent and I can't agree with Virginia Woolf's description of Cavendish as a "cucumber" who crowded out all the roses from the garden (Woolf really didn't like Cavendish's writing). I was initially quite charmed by the opening sections; the foolish man who stole the nobleman's daughter and spirited her away in a boat - the Gods becoming angry and punishing him and the daughter being the only survivor. She is washed up in the Polar Seas and from there arrives at the new world. It was when I got to the lengthy descriptions of the physical/philosophical nature of the world with the various experts that I lost heart. It was all too much for me and I gave up (not something I readily do with any book; but I just wasn't enjoying it). It was interesting that Cavendish predicted her new world would be accessible from the Poles - there was a belief which was prevalent even up to Franklin's expeditions that there was a temperate world at the heart of the Poles. One early explorer described finding a volcano there; and if you have ever read Shelley's Frankenstein, you will know that the explorer Walton who relates the tale is himself trying to find this tropical paradise at the heart of the Polar regions. Not for me this one; but I'm not a fan of literature this early really. More of a Romantic myself. With this in view, this review should be taken with a pinch of salt as it really does reflect personal taste rather than a critical comment on the quality of the work. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Fascinating! : I read this for a book group I belong to. I found it really fascinating. Written in 1666 at the same of the age on enlightenment Margaret Cavendish is a well informed woman at a time when women were not expected to vr. She creates a fantasy world to examine the real worlf. Hard going at times and the section on number was way above my head. What I found most interesting was how much more there was to the 17 th cent than the fire of London and the Civil War! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 2, 2020 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Jane -- Wrong cover : I received the book with the right cover, so I wrapped it and gave it as a present to my friend. Only to have him to tell me it is the wrong book! Look at the photo: the content is “How to take smart notes” with the book cover of “The Blazing World”! This is most embarrassing. How this could happen I can not fathom! - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Jim -- Heavy going but may be worth it : Woah, this is some wordy marathon of a tale indeed! Surreal, definitely very antiquated (such is the timeframe from which it comes) yet recommended for anyone into that kind of thing. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2014 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- A mixed bag. : Interesting historically as an early published work by a woman but quite hard to read in parts where she just plonks down what she has read elsewhere. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 19, 2014 )
